I have just returned from Egypt and felt that the members might wish
to know that the Egyptian Museum in Cairo has instituted a complete
ban on ALL types of photography inside the museum. I was informed by
a member of the Cairo ARCE office that the ban has been extended to
include scholars with prior approval. One of their fellows was even
ordered to cease taking photos that had been previously approved and
permitted. I submitted a list of pictures I felt I needed for my
work and no one would even discuss the list with me.
All cameras are now required to be checked by the ticket booth at the
museum courtyard entrance. Photos can be taken IN the courtyard but
nowhere in the museum proper. An unidentified museum employee
informed me that the SCA ordered the ban in order to increase sales
of picture postcards.
At the time we were there two weeks ago, however, no permits were
required for photography at either the Luxor Museum or the Mummy
Museum in Luxor.
