As for Arabs, I would never rent to them. This is a respectable building, and they are known for bringing girls to the apartment. Besides that, they have strange cultural habits! They like to cook and eat on the floor, for example. Once I rented to some Arabs and they were using some sort of coal burner to cook with, and it damaged and burned the floor, leaving it black. I had to replace the whole floor. And they like to eat off of the furniture! Yes, indeed! They sit on the living room chairs with their food next to them on the chair, not even on a plate, and they scoop up the rice with one hand to eat directly off of the chair. Plus they like to rub their toes. Really! They are insanely fond of giving themselves toe massages at all times! It's disgusting. [Fieldnotes 08-17-1999]

One matter on which the tourism workers I interviewed were united was their opinion that Arab tourists were not interested in ancient Egyptian monuments. The stereotype of sex-crazed Gulf tourists was often juxtaposed to the more "cultural" tourism of Westerners. One day I was talking to a vendor in al-Hussein, an area of old Islamic Cairo that was popular among Western and Arab tourists alike. As I asked him about the difference between Arab and Western tourists, he took a piece of paper and started drawing a cartoon Arab wearing a white headdress with a beard, and said,
"Foreigners come here to see the pharaonic sites. They are interested in the old Egyptian history and culture. The Arabs come here for what kind of tourism? Sex. They aren't interested in any sort of history, archaeology [athar], or culture. All they know is Pyramids Road and furnished flats. Do you know what furnished flats are?"
[Yes, like in Mohandiseen.]
"Exactly! They come here for sex." [Fieldnotes 07-24-1999]
